Teaching About Meteors 5/23/18
Denison Olmsted, a physicist and astronomer, was the first to hold records of a meteor shower. Denison is said to have created meteor science in 1833. Meteors are little combinations of ice and rock that release from comets as the travel in their orbits along the sun. Meteor’s that make it to the point where they hit the ground are called meteorites.

Sound Project Blog - 4/12/18
Summary
Our project consisted of us having to create a "One Man Band" worthy instrument. The instrument had to include a percussion, wind section and string instrument. Each different section on the instrument had to play 3 different notes. And the instrument had to be originally thought out and made from scratch using pieces from the maker lab or home. What I did for my string portion was stretch out rubber bands using thumbtacks on the side of a cardboard box. For the wind portion I got plastic straws and lined them up depending on height. And for the percussion part I used a wooden block to tap on the wind portion and different sides of the box for different noises.
Backward-Looking:
I knew a decent amount of things before this unit on sound started.Amplitude is the length from inside of the wave. Its a line that goes from the base line to the inside of the crest. A wavelength is the length in between crests from wave top to wave top. Sound waves are similar to ocean waves, radio waves and even microwaves. They are all waves of energy, traveling through solids or space.
Inward-Looking:
I feel proud about this piece of work expect for the fact that I completely left my percussion part to the last minute. So my only other option was a wooden block to hit the block in different places. And in my opinion thats pretty plain and boring. But one thing I enjoyed was that we got to use our creativity to make a instrument that we thought of. I also liked the fact that we did multiple re touches to our instrument every time we learned something new about sound waves.
Outward-Looking:
Yes in a way I did because many other people used boxes and attached rubber bands for strings. Its the same when it comes to the little straws that you blow into. One thing I did differently is probably just using a wooden block as my "percussion". And tapping different places of my box with said wooden block. The process was similar because we had to revise the instrument every time we did a lab on sound waves to make it more legitimate and interesting.
Forward-Looking:
One thing I would definitely change is my percussion pieces. I would probably prefer to put 3 little glass jugs and fill them up with different amounts of water and hit them so it would make a different sound. Since my percussion part was completely gone I figured this would be better since it was part of one of our labs that we did on the sound wave unit. And since the amount of water inside of a jug changes the way it sounds, that would make it super easy to create the percussion section.

We did a lab on sound waves in class. We had to tap these tuning forks on hard surfaces and see what tune it would be, we would have to see what type of pattern depending on the what the type of tune the running fork detects. We put the tuning forks in water and the vibrations would make the water splash out.

Frequency is how many 'cycles' of a wave occur in one second, the amplitude is how large a wave is from the middle to the crest and the wavelength is the measure from crest to crest. A sound wave that has a bigger wavelength will have a low frequency, low pitch, and low energy. Pitch is related to frequency because the higher the frequency the higher the pitch is. The electromagnetic spectrum is the whole range of electromagnetic waves that are in order based on increasing frequency. Pitch is the highness or lowness of the sound created where the volume is how loud or quiet a sound is. Electromagnetic waves are electric and magnetic fields that move through space extremely fast. Sound waves are mechanical waves or a vibration of molecules.

Music WAC 2/27/18
Why Music Should Be Used While Doing Work
Music has been around since 500 AD. Music can be found everywhere ... including classrooms. When you walk into a class of kids you will probably notice some students have earbuds in or headphones on. The on going debate of whether music should be used while studying is a strong debate. Some students claim that listening to music helps the think better while eliminating annoying background noise such as as a baby crying , a bird constantly chirping, kids screaming and laughing loudly etc. Some students counter argue that music affects their learning in a negative way, they say its too distracting. I'm about to prove why listening to music while studying DOES actually help you learn.
Endurance is something that many kids have trouble doing while studying . Endurance while doing homework is basically the ability to do ongoing homework with no distractions. Many kids have trouble staying on task. "Background music may improve focus on a task by providing motivation and improving mood. During long study sessions, music can aid endurance." This quote was said by Nicky Davis from the Article "Is it Good to Listen to Music While Studying?"
Music helps block out the multiple distractions in a study area such as a library or park. Listening to music isolates you to your own study space and it helps people feel calm and peaceful. It was scientifically proven that listening to music enhances studies when you're at a place with loud background noise.“ Subjects tested in environments with background music were found to get better results than those tested against background noise. Therefore, taking along an iPod and a set of headphones may come in handy if you’re looking to avoid being distracted by any ambient sounds.”
The arguments from the other side are that people shouldn't listen to music while doing work or studying. The say this because scientific studies show that people don’t remember certain tasks and bits of knowledge they need the most for learning. “When you hear something you like, it heightens your arousal and mood, which improves performance”

In conclusion music does help people learn because it puts them into a calm quiet environment of their own. Music puts people in a calm state of mind which helps them stay focused on their work, music prevents distraction and the annoyance of background noises. But it really depends on the type of student the kids are because some would just prefer a quiet room with no music while some kids would prefer to be in a room with headphones on."Ultimately, the effects of music on study habits are dependent on the student and their style of learning. If easily distracted, students should most likely avoid music so they can keep their focus on their work. Conversely, students who function better as multi-taskers may find that music helps them to better concentrate."

Roller Coaster Project - 2/18/18
Summary:
Acceleration is a change in velocity over a certain time period. Vectors are quantities that are completely described by both direction and a magnitude and a Scalar is only fully described by a Magnitude such as a numerical value. Speed is the amount of distance an object covers in an specific amount of time. Speed can be found when you divide the distance traveled by time. A force is a sudden push or pull that results from another object. Potential energy is stored energy of placement possessed by a certain object.
Backward-Looking
I didnt know anything about physics until we learned about it in class, the only thing i knew was that we were going to build a rollercoaster because last years 8th grade class did the same project when they were in 8th grade. The closest thing i got to learning physics was learning about gravity from a documentary on TV.
Inward-Looking:
I feel very happy with my work because we put a lot of effort into it and our creativity juices were flowing. I love our loop because it works perfectly fine and its mid drop which makes it cooler. I didn't like how ugly the cardboard looked while supporting out dowel. It just looked really out of place. I enjoyed building it because at time the hot glue would burn through our tubing and we would have to redo the process over and over again.
Outward-Looking
I would give my project a A+ mainly because my groups rollercoaster was neatly done and we followed everything the rubric said to do. Our rollercoaster was put together by using hot glue which didn't show out like the tape did . So our roller coaster was perfectly smooth, both inside and out. And our labels were taped onto the side of our roller coaster to make the structure neater and less messy. And our
Forward-Looking
One goal I want to set for myself is to probably organize out what day I would do this and that. I say this because I feel like my group was kind of rushed. My group was kind of rushed because we would be springing from one place to the other place doing work. But the thing is we would leave our remaining work like 80% done while starting another part of the project. So for future projects I would want to make a calendar to stay on track and to keep myself on task and focus.

S&EP Analyzing & Interpreting Data: In class we did an experiment which involved us using Hot Wheels and some Tracks, this experiment helped us see the different types of changes in velocity and acceleration, we would compare the data to how it would fit into newtons laws. We would time the car as it went down the ramp that my team created, then we would calculate the velocity , speed , and acceleration, and we saw how it related to newtons laws of motion.

Newtons Laws - 2/4/18 - super bowl sunday
| How many Newton's Laws are there and what are they? - Quora |
First Law - A object that is at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the exact same speed and in the exact same direction unless acted upon by a unbalanced force.Second Law - Acceleration is created when a force acts on a certain mass. The greater the mass is , the greater the amount of force will be.Third Law - For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Forces - 1/28/18
A force is a sudden push or pull that results from another object. We measure forces in Newtons, 1 Newton = 1 kg • m/s2.Balance forces are two forces in opposite directions of an object, they are equal in size.A unbalanced for is when its not equal in direction and size.A net force is created when you combine two forces

Acceleration is a change in velocity over a certain time period.A car is accelerating if its constant speed is 65 km/h because it’s direction could change.Acceleration is a vector quantity so at anytime the velocity or object’s direction could change. An acceleration graph shows you how quick a certain object moves and the distance its traveled.

Charity Fair - 12/17/17
Summary -
Depression. Something no one should experience. But sadly there are teens that have depression or suicidal thoughts. For this years charity fair my group sold flower candles to raise funds so that no child or teen will be left alone in the dark again. Our charity is Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. When people struggle with depression they feel they are always in the dark. We are making candles because they symbolizes how when someone is in the dark, something can light up that sad moment. Our candles would be that light.
Backward-Looking - I knew the whole run down because this is my fourth year of charity fair. The requirements were the same , but this year we had to make a campaign video as well as a calling card to lure people to donate to our charity . Another thing that was new was our mapping of where the products were bought and where they originated from. Other than that our statistics and our ignite presentation were still the same as the other 3 years.
Inward-Looking - I feel very proud about what we have done. My group honestly didn't think we were going to pull off the clear gel effect on our candles. We managed to get through the messes and confusion that the wax had given us. But one thing we could have done less of was make a huge mess around the kitchen.
Outward-Looking - I want people to see that this is a charity that I have lots of hope for because its a problem that close to me and I don't want any other teen or adult going through such a pain. I want people to see the effort my group put into our candles, I want them to see how much we truly care about raising funds for this charity.
Forward-Looking - One thing I would like to approve upon is our time management because we wouldn't really have time to finish our products and we would have to constantly be meeting up. And for our backboard my group would often forget to print paper , which didnt help as our deadlines approached quicker and quicker. And in the process of making our product we would sometimes waste up to an hour of trying to find an efficient way to remove the wax. Time management is definitely something that can be fixed to help my group thrive.

Motion - 12/10/17
| Physics4Kids.com: Motion: Introduction |
SP4: Analyzing and interpreting data: I used data from an experiment or small lab that we did in class to find the displacement and distance in the different steps and directions we walked. We also used the pythagorean theorem to help find the displacement in some of our steps. A pattern we noticed was that the distance was always bigger than the displacement.

SP4: Analyzing and interpreting data: We did a game in which we compared the different bones to see which animal is closely related to the T-Rex. The caiman ( small alligator thing ) and the parrot were the last animals to closely relate to the T-Rex. What won out was Parrot because it had almost everything the T-Rex had. It was the same with the caiman except it has heels while the parrot and T-Rex do not.

Survival Of The Fittest 10/29/17
![]() |
| Survival of the Fittest - Skeptical Science |
Summary:Survival Of The Fittest was thought of by Charles Darwin in 1809. Survival Of The Fittest is the theory is a way of explaining the works of natural selection. Natural selection is the process in which organisms get random mutations that are randomly chosen by nature in a way that makes sense even though it’s random. In other words when an species changes to adapt to its environment it becomes a inheritable trait for its offspring. Soon most of that species population will have that genetic change that will help it thrive more in the wilderness. As for those who did not inherit the mutation then they are at risk in the wild.
SP2: Developing and using models:
We created a comic strip demonstrating how Natural selection worked and how mutations were passed on too offspring. We also included how they would adapt to their environment. They would adapt when there would be a change in the environment which puts them at risk. Then natural selection happens and a species will inherit a genetic mutation that will spread throughout the species giving them more chances to thrive.

Evolution & Mutations 10/20/17
Summary: Mutations are a change in DNA. DNA is what gives the living thing its looks and characteristics. Mutations can be beneficial ,harmful or neutral towards the animal or living thing. They are quite random which makes it pretty difficult to handle or notice. Somatic mutations are types of mutations that affect the living thing but it will not pass on to offspring. Mutations that make the organism die are called - Lethals. Not all mutations matter to evolution, Somatic mutations don’t help with evolution because the mutation the living thing has will not be passed down to the offspring. The only mutations that will matter and possibly help towards evolution will be those mutations that have the ability to be passed down to offspring which could impact the next generation and possibly cause evolution.
SP1: Asking questions and defining problems
We asked questions like "Do mutations have anything to do with evolution." and our answer to that was yes and no. That is because not ALL mutations are inheritable to their offspring. ONLY somatic mutations can be passed on to the offspring of the affected organism which could lead to evolution in the long run.
